The Costa Rivierra sailed from Savona with a 15 degree list, sewage coming out of the toilets into the cabins and corridors and soaking carpets and the drinking water was contaminated. On boarding, passengers were requesting their Passports be returned so they could leave the ship, but in the event, it was discovered that the ship had actually sailed (with some of the hatches in the side of the ship still open). A delegation of some of the British passengers managed to get a meeting with the Captain to ask why on earth he had left the port of Savona. He claimed in this meeting and others that he was acting under the instructions of his Head Office in Genoa. We all spent a very worrying night wearing life jackets. The ship hugged the coast line on it's way to Naples. We and some of the other British passengers managed to contact the British Consul in Naples who boarded the ship and enabled us to leave with our Passports. We watched the Rivierra leave Naples that evening from our Hotel and it was still listing. The cruise was terminmated in Sicily the following morning. This "cruise" was actually featured in a "Cruises from Hell" programme on the TV and our photographs and videos were used to highlight the problems. Although the cruise was excellent value and very enjoyable we had no safely drill at all until the last day of then 7 day voyage - and after the Concordia accident. Because many companies now operate a "get-on" get-off" policy, the only time the drill is held is on the first day out from their home port. Those joining the cruise at other ports enroute do not have safety drill. We were on a mediterranian cruise at the same time as the Concordia disaster happened – in fact we arrived in Genoa that night.

I have never been shown that, in any of the 20+ cruises that I have been on. Passengers only have to give up just 10-15 minutes of their cruise to listen to the safety, it's not a great deal of time is it? I would have given 10's in all categories. The friendliness was beyond compare. The "captain" of the Rising Tide bar permitted passengers to raise and lower the bar the 3 decks that she travels. The ladies in the cupcake store were WONDERFUL. I did notice that RCCL's crew manager Julie was on board, as was the captain's wife. We met them in the champagne bar. The diving performers were incredible, and from our stateroom we could watch them practice. When I say "watch them", my wife really watched them. These divers are wonderful and unbelievably fit.
