Norwegian’s new ship to be based in NYC

Norwegian Cruise Line’s 4,000 passenger ship, Norwegian Breakaway, will make New York City its year-round home port from May 2013 to March 31, 2015, with an inaugural season sailing to Bermuda, the line has just announced.

Norwegian Breakaway—which will be the largest ship ever to home port in the New York City —will replace Norwegian Star, and embark on a minimum of 88 cruises from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.

“By making New York City home to its newest ship, Norwegian Cruise Line is further confirming our standing as a top cruise destination and a place that tourists from around the world want to visit,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

“New York is not only one of our top markets, but also my hometown,” said NCL chief executive Kevin Sheehan.

In a first for Norwegian, it was also announced that America’s most popular living artist, pop icon and New Yorker, Peter Max, has been commissioned to paint the signature hull artwork for the ship, which is scheduled for delivery in April 2013.

Project Breakaway ships will each have 1,024 balcony staterooms and 238 mini-suites in rich panelling with warm tones and colours. More details on both ships can be found here and on Norwegian’s Facebook page.

About Adam Coulter
Adam Coulter was a bit of a cruise novice when he took over the captaincy of Cruise International in 2010. In the past year and a half he's jumped right in, clocking up seven cruises in a year and a half plus a visit to the Panama Canal. When he's not on board a ship he likes nothing more than jumping off to do a spot of scuba diving, preferably in the warm waters of the Caribbean.
