Day 1: On board the Midnatsol

Hurtigruten MidnatsolFlying into Tromso was an interesting experience – a bleak, snow-dusted landscape, with mists hanging low over the mountains and curling round the fjords.

I’m on board Hurtigruten’s Midnatsol, which sets sail tonight to Hammerfest (why does that always sound like a heavy metal festival to me?), the most northerly town in Europe.

But the primary reason I’m here is to see the Northern Lights. It’s been a long-held ambition of mine (long before the Joanna Lumley programme!), but whether we will or not is anybody’s guess. They go on all the time, apparently, but you need just the right conditions.

A few degrees below zero and a clear sky are the two main ones, and we’ve got one at least: the former, unfortunately however, it’s looking pretty misty out there right now.

About Adam Coulter
Adam Coulter was a bit of a cruise novice when he took over the captaincy of Cruise International in 2010. In the past year and a half he's jumped right in, clocking up seven cruises in a year and a half plus a visit to the Panama Canal. When he's not on board a ship he likes nothing more than jumping off to do a spot of scuba diving, preferably in the warm waters of the Caribbean.
